The Secrets of the Château
Château de Théoule
The history
of the Château de Théoule
Château de Théoule traces its roots back to the 17th century. Built around 1630 as a seaside soap factory, it drew its wealth from the surrounding olive groves and maritime trade, transforming imported soda into a renowned soap.
As industrial activity gradually declined, the estate underwent a gradual transformation. At the end of the 19th century, it caught the attention of Lyon industrialist Prosper Ferrouillat, who infused it with a new elegance: the building shed its functional character to embrace the grace of a refined residence. In 1913, British aristocrat Harry Crowford Leland de Langley continued this transformation, giving the property a romantic allure and affirming its vocation as a seaside retreat.
The 20th century saw the Château pass through several hands, including Henri Varnet, a Citroën designer, in 1964. After decades marked by changes of ownership and a period of relative quiet, its story gained new momentum in December 2021, when the BMF group acquired the property.
Between 2022 and 2024, an extensive restoration project was undertaken, combining respect for the heritage with modernity. The original volumes were enhanced, the interiors reinvented, and subtle extensions inspired by the neo–Art Deco style added a refined touch to the ensemble.
In spring 2024, Château de Théoule was reborn as a five-star hotel. Its 44 rooms and suites, exceptional spa, private beach, and refined dining venues now offer a truly unique setting, where history and the Mediterranean art of living meet in timeless elegance.
